Disease Control in Captive Snake Collections

I am writing this because of the hoop-la and finger-pointing started on a different forum regarding infectious diseases introduced into private collection. Determining a source of infection in private reptile collections is very difficult at best. It's not like you slept with one woman (or Man) you ...

Re: New evidence suggesting venomoiding is detrimental

Keep in mind that this is not basied on any hard scientific evidence. Just observation of staff with more than 40 years of Mamba experience. The feedback I'm getting from other forums is that immunity is not basied on the gland but encoded in DNA. However this is a rather interesting and requires mo...

New evidence suggesting venomoiding is detrimental

Over the many years I've been keeping venomous snakes this single topic which causes the most controversy is that of “venomoiding”. Venomoiding is the process in which the venom glands and ducts are surgically removed, rendering the snake incapable of envenomating. Not a particularly complex bit of ...

Re: Why I never want horned adders again

I agree BV! I have one female, that I cannot breed and continue to pass on new B. caudalis that are available. She has eaten every male I paired her with, that gets expensive! Sorry for the loss of your specimens :(

Yeah, they just sit and wait. They're very calm and never miss a chance to feed, that's when you see them move.

Clear as Night & Day

One cool but little know trait of Crotalus pifanorum is the it changes color intensities from day time to night time. To demonstrate I took pictures in it's bin, under the same lighting conditions, camera settings, and distance (more or less). I did not alter the photo's in any way to change color b...

Nasty Paracite

An adult WC EA Gaboon hocked this beauty up... I looked through every refecence book I have and can't identify it...I will send the picture to Dr. Jacobson on Monday. The Gaboon was under treatment for Tape worms, I guess they didn't like the Pancur either...LOL Please note it seems to be filled wit...

Re: Two Down, one to go...

Hi BV: The two that I speak of is: 1) got them to court. 2) got them to copulate 3) and lastly her giving birth...that all three of the "basic" steps to sucessful captive breeding of this species, if they were Oviparus them there would be four, get the eggs to hatch. Captive care for this ...

Two Down, one to go...

First ever documented captive courtship and copulation (as far as I know) of Bitis parviocula. They have been courting since 23 August but this is the first "Hook-up" I've seen. I think tropical storm Hanna triggered copulation, just a guess. Now she has to give birth in the spring to make...

WW is doing DNA on the Bitis group to see what really is going on in the Genus. I'm supplying samples of what I have to him to be included in his work.

I'll check out his tail....as far as I knew it was ok...maybe just the angle...
