Re: South Africa's Bite Darwin Award Winners

You can also watch them eat gravid scorpions.
You can blame survivor sensationalism TV programs for creating a market for these types of things.

Re: Ispot

Just an update:

Site is starting to pick up, although not many reptiles being added, it would be nice to get some more records and help with identification. Quite a few people joined at first but haven't come back, but it should be more interesting now.

Re: Western Leopard Toads

Just to add, i know they are experimenting with these strategies in Noordhoek , but that road is perpendicular to the wetland and not amongst the residential areas. It is a high mortality zone so should be good to see what comes of it.

Re: Western Leopard Toads

I seemed to have missed this topic last year. I do not think that providing tunnels or toad proofing road sides is a realistic solution, well especially in residential areas. Firstly the toads often use the roads to migrate towards their breeding ponds as they are the easiest terrain to move across,...

Re: Kinixys belliana zombensis

Sorry guys, got mixed up, the Eastern one (K. b. belliana) is the one we get down here. But there are two disjunct distributions, one in the east and one in the south east. I can see from the site that they recognise the south eastern distribution as a separate species (zombensis), this is possibly ...

Re: Kinixys belliana zombensis

That is definitely a Bell's Hinged Tortoise, the markings are quite distinct. It's distribution seems to border your area, so I think it is K. b. nogueyi From Bill's book: K. b. belliana (Eastern) has usually 5 claws on each forefoot, while K. b. nogueyi (Western, and I assume South africa) usually ...
