Re: More than 200 Frogs Confiscated at OR Tambo

I hardly expect that they would have become pets, more likely they would have become food (bull frogs) or traditional medicine (rain frogs). I can easily see the bullfrogs being bred in capitvity, but I doubt the rain frogs were captive bred.

Re: Rinkhals Bitten Weimeraner

The severity of the bite is dependant on a lot of factors, including but not limited to - the size of the dog (large dogs can handle more venom than smaller ones) - the physical condition of the dog (age, is it healthy, does it have any medical conditions etc) - the size of the snake (large snakes p...

Scientists ID new genus of tree frogs long thought extinct

New Delhi - For more than a century, two mysterious tree frog specimens collected by a British naturalist in 1870 and housed at the Natural History Museum in London were assumed to be part of a vanished species, never again found in the wild. Until now. A group of scientists, led by renowned Indian ...

Re: Advice cape cobra snake bite - anti venom

You can use SAIMR polyvalent antivenom, but that would require some knowledge about intravenous fluid therapy, as well as anaphylactic reactions, as well as neccesitate purchasing the equipment to properly provide for and manage both of these. I'd suggest you find out which of the ambulance services...

Re: Lake Turkana, Northern Kenya

Got asked to move a snake from one of the turbine foundations today, turned out to to be a very nice Bitis arietans , my first Kenyan one, and without a doubt the most placid puff adder I've ever handled http://i.imgur.com/2XeObNT.jpg http://i.imgur.com/JDLZRx8.jpg http://i.imgur.com/TmQ6jvw.jpg htt...

Re: Hi all

Your temps should be fine for them as is. If they are active and eating I wouldn't stress about it much. I have no idea where they would get calcium from in nature, perhaps from eating molluscs? I presume in captivity the assumption is made that they do not get the required Vit D3 synthesis brought ...

Re: Hi all

We Use Gecko. Never seen it spelt differently, but I presume that European languages may have variations. As far as I know they are fully nocturnal geckos, I only found them during the day when we disturbed them during construction. At night they were quite plentiful on the trees and so on. Ones I h...

Re: Hi all

Stunning geckos! They make great captive specimens, as long as they have enough to eat, and they can eat pretty large stuff too. I have always found them wild on sandy substrate, under logs, or in holes in the ground (old termite mounds). Last time I found lots of them was in Mozambique http://sarep...
