Re: Wild Queensland -- Nov 2011

Thanks, all. After Chillagoe, my friends and I shifted out to Georgetown. Georgetown is an gold-mining town at the base of Cape York. One of these abandoned mines has a dam that can be quite good for some of the northern birds. I also wanted to see if the Merten's Water Monitors were still along the...

Re: Wild Queensland -- Nov 2011

Thanks, Westley and Wolf. How much would I have to pay you to take me on such a trip lol? After Mission Beach, we drove to Chillagoe for a couple of nights. This is an interesting area with lots of limestone outcrops and caves. There were thunderstorms each night. http://i31.photobucket.com/al...

Mission Beach

We arrived at Mission Beach in the late afternoon. Mission Beach is a coastal village that is surrounded by rainforest. Unfortunately, Cyclone Yasi did enormous damage to the area when in struck in February of this year. The rainforest canopy is gone for now. It will be a number of years before the ...

Porcupine Gorge NP

Thanks, Steve. After two interesting days near Winton, we drove on to Porcupine Gorge NP near Hughenden. This was only a short drive of a few hours. Unfortunately, there were bush fires in the area so it was smoky and conditions for photographs were not good. Along the way, we stopped at a lookout w...

Re: Wild Queensland -- Nov 2011

Thanks very much, everyone, for the feedback. Some of you may know of Danny Brown here in Australia. He replied on another forum with the following information regarding the Tympanocryptis : The T. cephalus is now no longer a cephalus as this species name is now restricted to WA specimens. That anim...

Wild Queensland -- Nov 2011

I had to use lots of accumulated leave this year and I never like to waste it at home. So, after returning from Italy, I set off on a photography trip with a friend (Ted) and his son (Andrew) from Arizona. Ted and I explored the deserts in California and Mexico 40 years ago when we were in high scho...

Re: Maliau Basin, Sabah, Malaysia. June 2011

I think that the gecko may well be Ptychozoon horsfieldi . I highly cropped a couple of other shots and now can see what looks like a gliding membrane along the abdomen and also a few denticulate tail lobes. I had not noticed either feature before. http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c386/moloch05/Mal...

Re: Maliau Basin, Sabah, Malaysia. June 2011

Thanks very much, everyone. uncutdiamonds, Malaysia has two states in Borneo: Sarawak and Sabah. Most of Borneo, though, belongs to Indonesia. Bushviper, Malaysia should definitely be on the bucket list. There is so much to see even though snakes are hard to come by. Someone on another forum asked a...

Thanks, Qball. Yes, it was lots of fun! A few more before the leps. Maliau Basin, Sabah, Malaysia. June 2011

In June, I visited the Maliau Basin Reserve in Sabah with a group of butterfly photographers from Malaysia and Singapore. I met the group on the net and they kindly invited me along to participate in a survey of the butterflies near the headquarters of the reserve. http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/...

Re: Taman Negara, Malaysia. June 2011

Thanks very much, Wolf. I really enjoyed the fish in the Tahan River. The water was usually clear so I could see a number of species that I kept in aquariums when I was young. Familiar species included several barbs, loaches and gouramis. I think that it would be fun to return with an underwater cam...

Re: Taman Negara, Malaysia. June 2011

Thanks Wolf and Wolfgang. Wolfgang, you probably would not recognize Kuala Tahan now. The town opposite the park has lots of people and the habitat has been cleared and replaced with oil palm plantations. There is a new road across the hills opposite the Tembeling River. Logging has just commenced. ...

Re: Taman Negara, Malaysia. June 2011

Thanks very much, everyone. Vrakkie, that would be depressing! How sad to lose all those photos and your equipment. I use a Canon 40D with a Tamron 180mm macro for most of the photos. Habitat shots are with a Tamron 18x250 zoom. Night shots are usually with a Canon 100mm macro. Heliconiinae I found ...

Taman Negara, Malaysia. June 2011

In June, I spent two weeks at Taman Negara (peninsular Malaysia) before I met the others and headed out to the Maliau Basin in Sabah (Borneo). Taman Negara is a fantastic national park and is one of my favourites with its lowland, dipterocarp rainforest. This was my fifth visit but I still saw sever...
