I believe the tail spike is used as an anchor for the snake to push forward against while burrowing underground.

That is possibly the worst part about it.
Just saying we should not be too hasty in branding people as 'disgusting' if they have been eating snakes to survive before livestock breeding even existed.
If its for the skin trade its a different story.
