Spiders in snake room and vivs.

Postby Primogen » Wed Oct 16, 2013 2:31 pm

So my snake room has now become a haven for wild spiders and the occasional geckos.

In the beginning I would remove them outside, but since I have stopped doing that they have come in droves and started to live in all my vivs aswell.
I don't want to remove them anymore as they keep my room insect free and I don't think they really pose a problem to my snakes.

So I want to ask if any of you just let them be or have any opinions on the matter?

I have the same problem, spiders all over the house. We moved them out at first, but we can't win, so now my dad sprays them with doom if they are not in the same room as any of the animals. Sad, but we have thousands!
3-1-4 Leopard Gecko
1-1-2 Bearded Dragon
0-1 Brown House Snake
2-3 Ball Python
1-1 Western Hognose
1-1 Kenyan Sand Boa
3-2 Corn Snake
0-0-1 Bosc Monitor
0-1 Taiwanese rat snake

I would not really call them a problem, I don't mind them except for some of the weirder looking ones, like the scorpian spiders:

I have the same problem with intruders in my cages. My problem is ants!!

I have brick cages and yet they still come in. I have seen placed where they have made holes in the plaster. I have thick plaster on all my walls and at least 4coats of paint and yet they still make holes and come in from the outside.

My cages with peat seems to draw the most of them or they start colonies under slate pieces I have in the cages. They even attack my feeder insects.
I clean out the cages and replace with fresh substrate but 2 weeks later they are back.
I don't like ants and don't want them even if some say they are harmless. My beardy dropped eggs and within a hour a few ants where already on them.

Has anyone used the pest magic from Verimark?
I have a few snakes but mostly my lizard collection in this room so I don't want to use something that will harm my lizzards seeing that they still need to eat insects...

Ultrasonic only works on some insects and I don't think it works on ants.
I keep a few ant traps on the floor so they leave my vivs alone.

What I use for ants is cinamin, I know you might be scepticle but try it its very cheap has a pleasing aroma.
Works like a charm on ants and I'm sure it won't harm your collection.

Spiders in and around your terrariums is not a problem at all. Unless you are looking at really large ones (unlikely) or really toxic ones like Button and sac spiders I would just suggest you leave them alone. Ants are terrible and ant traps (green disks with a honey scented bait) work the best for them. Karbadust starts to break down as soon as it hits soil so you need to put this on skirtings and shelves to keep them away.
It is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

Those who are afraid to ask are ashamed of learning.

Thanks BV.
Will get the ant traps and try them out.

Ps. regarding the cinnamon trick. Do you use cinnamon powder like the ones for pancakes ,, Mmmmm......

or cinnamon sticks?

Thanks

They are there because of all the food, once the roaches disappear so do they. The amount of spiders is a good indication of the amount of food in your house. Also it doesn't help telling us about your spider problem if it's in the garage.
If I'm gonna be an old, lonely man, I'm gonna need a thing, you know, a hook, like that guy on the subway who eats his own face. So I figure I'll be Crazy Man with a Snake, y'know. Crazy Snake Man. And I'll get more snakes, call them my babies, kids won't walk past my place, they will run. "Run away from Crazy Snake Man, " they'll shout!”

Thanks for the replies, I am alright having them in the room was just concerned about in my vivs.
Although I do keep having to remove the button spiders that live under the windowsill.
