This is for anything with regards to reptiles which is not species specific or over a broad band of reptiles. Be it husbandry, caging, etc. you can post it here.

looking for some unusual spp, anyone know any (legal) keeper

I am looking for the following species, from people/institutions keeping them legally as all our animals are on permit:
Aldabra or Sulcata tortoises
Dendrobates spp
Uroplatus sikorae (mossy leaf tail gecko) - as we recently lost our female.
If anyone can point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated!

Along the same lines, does anyone know where I can get in touch with Lorraine Spence (former owner of Tygerberg zoo) or Abraham Snyman who was the reptile curator - I would like to find out where their Galapagos tortoises went!

The Tygerburg tortoises were Aldabra tortoises and we were bought up by Mike Bester.
Sulcata are going to be listed as Alien Invasive species and nobody ... not even zoos will be allowed to keep them. They cross breed with Leopard tortoises hence we dont want them.
Dendrobates can be obtained from Monet Casino Bird Gardens as they have (had?) a decent breeding programme going.
Uroplatus are going to be far more difficult to replace. If any are imported I will let you know. I am not sure about quotas in Madagascar.
It is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

Those who are afraid to ask are ashamed of learning.

Hi Arno, sorry I didn't actually see your reply til now (a year later!) - thanks for the info re Sulcata's...do you know of any Galapagos in the country? No luck with Monte, nor with UShaka, seems everyone's breeding programme's with dendrobates (and all frogs) seem to have collapsed. I did find someone in Durban trying to breed with Uroplatus but so far they seem to have had no success.
