Info Needed, moving to Western Cape

Postby mania » Fri Mar 20, 2015 9:43 am

Hi

Within this year i will most probably be leaving JHB and moving down to the Western Cape.

There are a few things i Need to find out before hand with regards to my reptiles as I would like to take all my snakes down with me.

1. Who can I contact with regards to getting permits and how easy will it be to get these permits? (Contact details would be great)

2. What is the best way to take my snakes down, i will be driving down but just worried with the heat in the car, was thinking air freight but thats really expensive?

3. Are there any species we have here in JHB that are completely illegal In Western Cape?

4. In the garden route area, are there places I can buy rats & mice?

All the info will be greatly appreciated :)

Hi Mania,

you can contact Lee-Anne Benjamin at Cape Nature about permits and info on restricted species. She is very helpful.

CapeNature will ask you to organize an export permit from your local environmental office. This is then forwarded to CapeNature with a bank slip of proof of payment.
It is regrettable but no refunds even when the fault is not of your making.

Then you will have to request an import permit from CapeNature with another proof of payment. This may take a month or more as they are in no hurry but if you pay double the finger comes out the warm place and you may get a permit in a week??
If there is something on your list that CapeNature have difficulty pronouncing that animal will be excluded as a potential alien invasive. No reason will be given and then you play a new game where the rules are made up as they go.
Easy

Unecessarily pessimistic. I've never had any issues getting import permits to the Western Cape for my snakes. Imported from KZN and Gauteng and got all my permits in a week's time paying the normal R100 fee. Never been turned down either.

Thanks guys :)
I emailed Cape nature and they came back with what has been mentioned about R100 per application and import and export permit, I just need to give them my list that I want to bring into the Cape and they will tell me which are restricted and which are not.

I dont know how you get export permits for exotic herps but you can write a letter listing the animals you want to export and apply for a import with that.

Iguanas, beardies, leos, bosch monitors and hognose snakes are the common species you cant keep in the Western Cape.

Where in the garden route will you be moving to? Drop me a pm.

I live in George and i breed my own rodents i dont know of any petshops that would be able too supply my demand.

Also i dont know how the cages requirements here will affect you, it seems its dependant on the official doing your expection.

Thanks jka. I also don't know why the export permits are needed but I got a reply from Cape Nature and they said I must apply for the export permit first once that has gone through then I send that through to Cape nature for the import permit. Apparently it takes up to 10 working days if the export permit and all fees are paid up. I will drop you a pm and let you know :)
I didn't know they had tank requirements, I just bought two tank units, so I hope they would be right haha :P

In Cape Town, need Green Iguana info

Postby Sam J » Sun May 31, 2015 10:47 pm

Good evening :)

Dunno if the forum is still active, but i'd like to ask a question.
I'm currently residing in Cape Town, and i'd like to get a green iguana, or a pair.

Would you perhaps know what process i must follow? And from where(no backyard breeders) i might get?
