Bosc's bite

Bosc's bite

Postby Boadicea » Mon Oct 16, 2006 1:28 pm

Somebody should warn poor innocents like me before publishing pictures of cute new baby Bosc monitors. :smt021 Got some about two weeks ago and decided they might enjoy basking in natural sunlight for a change. Boy was I wrong! They got stressed out in the tub and one got hold of my finger... and bit.....and bit....and bit......kind of like having your digit caught in a pliers with someone squeezing the other end??
In the end I got hold of some Tequila (nearest alcohol to me) and put a few drops on his nose - it didn't work. Then tried a bit of cold water in his face from the tap. He wriggled a bit which just made the pain worse! Eventually more tequila ...don't know if he was just tired by this time but he let go. I tenderly returned both the little darlings to their cage vowing to wear my leather gloves until they get a little tamer.
The scariest part is that they are still babies

Vinegar also works well. It has the sharp smell without the alcohol content.

That's one of the risks with lizards, especially monitors. They are damned cute, but their bites are not much fun. Be carefull with thick gloves. You can't always gauge the strength you're grabbing them with, and could easily hurt the little darlings while they attempt to open your veins with their cute little razor edged teeth.

HAHAHAHA!!!

Been there, done that!! Not quite with a Boscs, but with my Rock Monitor when he was still a baby. It made a hole through my finger nail. It does not quite tickle. lol

One got me aswell the other day. I just push something in and open its jaws. and take out my hand.

But no reptile compares to the bite of a Tokay. Now thats something that will never let go of you.

I think that people sometimes over exaggerate the bite of a Tokay Gecko (No offence meant Eddy). It's not nice but really not that painful. I have been bitten quite a few times by my adults and it’s really not that bad as long as you don't try and pull your finger free because the more you pull the harder they bite down. (Of course everyone has their own personal views and experiences)

With the Tokay's I found that running a little cold tap water over their mouths usually work best to get them to let go.

I think that a monitor's bite is probably the worst and most painful. Even a little ridge tail can give you quite a good bite.

The worst bite I have had was probably from a juvenile Nile Water Monitor. Very painful...

a niloticus also got me on the finger once but the one time a tokay got me on my thumb over my nail and he just crushed down harder eveytime i moved my hand. a few weeks later another one got me on the same place. and then about a month after that a bosch got me on that spot.

The niloticus only got me on the half of my thumb not over the nail.

Yip i dont.

I have got bad luck when it comes to reptiles biting me.

Like the guys that work for us, when they clean the cages and take out the yellow annies they never bite them. But as soon as i want to take one out to show a customer it nails me :!: :!:

Hi...

Heavn´t you SA-people learnd anything - the alcohol isn´t for the bosc monitor (or retic or whatever) - it´s for you !!!

It doesn´t help letting the reptile go, but after a while you might start to dance with your new friend...

I always tell the customers that they are not the best pet snake.

But strangely enough the people on the westrand likes anacondas. They sell well over here.

I think it is because the okes here thought they saw it on the movies.
