My Mantid Collection

My Mantid Collection

Postby poobsta » Mon Apr 29, 2013 8:54 pm

I have really developed an addiction to mantids! They are some of the most interesting and stunning animals I have ever had the pleasure of keeping!
Heres a few pics of my collection so far.

Nice man. What cages are those ?
If I'm gonna be an old, lonely man, I'm gonna need a thing, you know, a hook, like that guy on the subway who eats his own face. So I figure I'll be Crazy Man with a Snake, y'know. Crazy Snake Man. And I'll get more snakes, call them my babies, kids won't walk past my place, they will run. "Run away from Crazy Snake Man, " they'll shout!”

Sorry guys! Feel like abit of a chop but my 'Sphodromantis' is in fact Polyspilota aeruginosa. Thanks a lot she is indeed a real stunner! ItBitMe, these pictures where taken outside of there cages with a black backround. I keep all my mantids in some high tubs I found then just drilled a whole bunch of ventilation holes and use damp paper towling under my substrate too keep humidity up. Abit of a mission because I have to change it before it gets mouldy. So still working on a caging idea that provides both good ventilation and decent humidity.

I think the second one is maybe Sphrodromantis.
I make my cages out of an 5liter tub with an piece of shadenet over the top. At the bottom I put coco and then keep it moist.

This is my trophy species. I always find only males.
They like to eat flying insects

Wow! Those flower mantises are extremely common in a local ladies garden, I've seen all the pictures she's taken, they are stunning
