Baboon spider ID

Postby axor » Sun Apr 13, 2008 10:36 pm

Hi All

Looking for an ID on a baboon spider I found on a farm about 45 km
outside of East London. Any help would be great thanks

Found it between a couple of old poles. It's about 6 cm leg span

It's a mature male, that's for sure... :)
My guess would be Harpactira "baviana", but i'm sure Ceratogyrus will correct me!!! I'll check my distribution info tomorrow if he doesn't come online and see if I can't give you a more definitive answer. (left the baboon spider info at my girlfriend's place i think, can't find it anywhere!).

May I ask why it is in a MICROWAVEABLE container :D ?

Kay - Yes. took pics and put him back on his web.

Bushsnake - Container is the same as you get from shops when you buy
curry and rice. I find it easier to take pics that way.

Spoon - LOL.

Ice Cold Milk / Ceratogyrus - Thanks

Definately not a golden brown. Golden brown is from the genus Pterinochilus or Augacephalus. That spider is definately a Harpactira.

Such a nice animal. Totally non-agressive when I was taking pics.

The worst part is it's illegal to keep them and I can fully understand that, but when you show the farmer who's land you found it on and the wife says " ow we squash those when we see them ". Tends to leave a bad taste in your mouth.

I found it close to the farm house and after hearing what they do to them I moved it to another piece of land because it probably would have ended up dead sooner or later.

I suppose moving it was illegal too. Makes sence doesn't it.

It is such a pity that people just don't undersand these awesome creatures. But it would probably be easier to educate the Baboon spider not to go near humans than it would be to educate humans not to kill these beauties.
