Horned Adders - Substrate

Horned Adders - Substrate

Postby Serpent » Thu Feb 16, 2012 1:29 pm

Hi all.

I have recently acquired 3 x Bitis Caudalis, very chuffed with them. I am not one to keep my snakes in tubs, and spend lots of time and effort on their cages. I have been told from a buddy that I could use kiddies playsand as a substrate, as it is sterile, white and cheap. Having spoken to another person however, he says I should be using calci-sand, as this is easliy digestable.

What do the veterans suggest?

You can use the play sand as it works okay. Try feeding them on a plate in each cage and you will be fine. Do not keep all three in one cage. That is a recipe for disaster.

I keep my B caudalis in over-sized cages with different types of substrate depending on their location.
I believe you have Limpopo locality.

Limpopo locality - cage: 900x450x450, not a lot of sand as substrate more leaves and rocks permanent water and spray for humidity every few days. (this works for me)

Do you mind sharing some pics?
