Postby rosshawkins2812 » Fri Jan 23, 2009 6:28 pm

On sunday I got a new pair o "kids". A stunning couple o Macklot's Pythons.
They are really stunning animals. The male is 1.7m and female is 1.8m

Any info you guys keen to share please drop this way.
For some reason I can't get past the upload screen in the gallery to get pics up here, so once that's done they'll make an appearance here.

Their temperaments are good. They very alert n ain't keen to bite at all.

They cruise around now n then, are very quiet with no hissing or anything like that. If there's movement outside the tank then they give a flick o the tongue, but no threats to strike.

Since I've had them I've just left them to themselves, still gotta get them some food though

Why would you want to keep a tropical snake on fish tank gravel? When the snakes get sick or have problems digesting food then you will know where to start looking for the husbandry mistakes.

Hi BV

This is the original tank that they came to me in, so I would obviously go with what is already there.
i have looked for info on Macklot's but not much out there, hence my asking for advice.

I take it you refering to cold sustrate, then slow metabolism of food?

Thanks

I would use news paper as substrate, and put a moist box in the cage! News paper is easy to clean (throw away) and the snake cannot ingest it! I think the dust from the gravel could also be a problem...

"cold" substrate" doesnt have anbything to do with it. You should have a "hot spot" in the cage by means of a controlled heating pad or even a basking light (The light must be covered properly to prevent the snake from burning itself!)..

This is basic husbandry for any snake!

Good luck with them!

Thanks Quintin.

I have noticed on this particualr box that the previous owner had the heat pad glued to the back of the tank. Not sure if this is a good thing, I'm used to having the pad on the floor under the substrate.

I'll remove the gravel and replace with newspaper

Thanks hey

Cool Stuff...

Dont forget to give them a Moist box. This could be anything from Big ice creame tub filled with damp spaghnum moss to a (I use this) big Tupper ware box.

This will aid with shedding! Make sure the tub is big enough for both of them to curl up in!

Oh... and monitor the heat from the heating pad, as it would be under the news paper i suspect. Tha pad shouldnt burn you hand if you touch it, it should just be warm. Its always wise to use a thermostat to controll the temp!

Leave it in the cage (On the cooler end)... They will love it! Always see that it is moist!

They live in tropical environments and are often found near water. The temperatures should be fairly constant 26 to 30 and if you cannot keep the humiduty up then the moist box is essential. Make sure the moss does not rot inside the box so check it fairly often. The heating pad against the side is fine but depending on where you live they might need a spotlight to keep them warm enough. Winter will be a challenge with the humidity and night temperatures. It might be required to put another heating pad in (on a thermostat) to ensure they do not get cold at night.

Thank you both o you.

Will sort a box out for them. Fed them two small mice each last night, very keen feeders. Was a mere snack as they came out looking for more.

Judging by the size o things recommended I might just be needing to increase the size o the tank they came with. It's about 1.2m long 30cm wide and 50cm tall.

I think it is too small myself, but it is recommended on one o the sites I found that Macklot's don't like very big tanks, an insecurities thing they say.

Thnaks
