yellow anconda cannabilsm?

Postby BRAD15 » Thu Apr 19, 2012 11:00 pm

Hey guys
Got a male and female yearling anacondas a few months ago, female was docile as a corn and the male was as defensive as a anaconda usually is, well any way this morning I opened their tank to find my females head down my males throat and my female constricting my male , tried to separate them but it was too late, male died quick due to the constriction and male shortly after, I'm curious to know, is this normal behaviour or Cannibalism?

Annie's are cannibalistic yes. Not as cannibalistic as say a king snake but they are. A friend of mine has a male anaconda that ate a dumeril boa a few weeks ago. I have two anacondas and I keep them well away from each other or other snakes!

Cannibalism is recorded in a myriad of species who meet in captivity. In the wild I think it happens less but when you house two snakes together this can happen even when there is no food involved. Yellow anacondas have been recorded eating their own kind and other snakes.

This is why we always advocate keeping snakes each in their own cage.
It is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

Those who are afraid to ask are ashamed of learning.
