karoo winter herping

Hey all..

still cant figure out how to post pics here for Neil hahah... anyway.. this is what we found herping on our farm in the karoo.




along with these little frogs that i dont know what the species are - but if anyone does.. im quite curious as they came in different shapes and colors and are fairly common along the furrows of irrigated lands.
Amoung others we also found a redlipped herald snake out in the bush - its extremely dry out there at the moment and the little guy was mos def not having his winter nap. never got a photo of him thou.
(im posting on Neil's behalf here so excuse my non scientific approach to these critters - I'm LJ.. the girlfriend who 3 months ago couldnt stand snakes and goggos.. but im learning )

I can't see from the pic very well, but i think the frog is a Tomopterna sp. I dont have any reference material with me to give you more than that though.

Your frogs are Boettger's Cacos Cacosternum boettgeri - fairly common frogs across much of the interior of SA, which use shallowly (normally) temporary) inundated areas for breeding.

Do you have any idea how big they get?all of them that we found where around thumbnail size.They also had quite a wide colour range from bright green through brown to grey.

If they are caco's then that is the adult size.

Yes, these guys don't get much over 20mm and come in a confusing array of colours.
