Creatures and Critters from the N/Cape

Creatures and Critters from the N/Cape

Postby BRB » Tue Sep 14, 2010 3:04 pm

Recently had the privelage of going flyfishing in the Richtersveld (Orange River) in the Northern Cape. It was the perfect oppurtunity to go and look for some of the local snake species and take a couple of pics. Unfortunatley we only found a couple of other critters! I am by no means an expert but as far as I know both the Millipede and the Scorpion are venomous and can inflict a painful bite/sting.

The Millipede was particulary impressive, he was almost 15cms long and had a very bad attitude, he reared up like a little cobra as we approached!

The two camps were De Hoop and Pootjiespram, the fishing was excellent, anything between 20 - 40 yellowfish per man per day!!

Haha...cool stuff man...

The "Milipede" is actually a big Centapede and a sting from one can be extremely painful !
Did you find anything else bud ?

Yip, those big centipedes are pretty common there, and have fooled me many times when they crawl around looking like a snake! The lizard is a Karoo girdle lizard (Cordylus polyzonus) but they vary quite a bit in colour from that area to other areas. Sounds like a fun trip. My problem is that there is always so much to do that I can't decide between photography, fishing, herping, birding, butterfly collecting or simply just walking. Pity time is always so limited!
We must remember that a photograph can hold just as much as we put into it, and no one has ever approached the full possibilities of the medium - Ansel Adams

You're right Bushsnake it's an amazing place, there really is so much to do, I took over 400 photos in between fishing and herping!!

PS There were plenty of scorpions, Mike my one mate found two in his tent tent....... dumbass didn't "zip up".
