Amphibian Quiz

Postby Westley Price » Wed Mar 17, 2010 7:48 am

Wow, I've waited so long to post this topic.

I had photographed some tadpoles a while back which I could positively ID and I spent the past few weeks looking for an adult before posting the quiz.

This prooved harder than I thought, but yesterday I got what I was looking for.

It was found in the Northen Cape, about 20km from Aggeneys.

This'll be very easy for some guys (Mongoose, Bushsnake) so please give the other guys a chance. After noon you guys can answer.

I'll post the adult pics once someone gets it right.

Guess the amphibian!

Enjoy!

Ditto. The clear/see through tail is the dead give away... besides the speckled gold head.

So you now know where and how to look for them... so you can guarantee me a sighting when I visit next time? ;) Is it possible to go look for them at night, or is it in one of the mining areas with serious security and access restrictions? I think night searching with a maglite and a pair of binoculars will work well. It would have been nearly impossible to find those natal cascade frogs we found near Nelspruit during the day, but at night it was easy.

(I have to admit they look completely different to the photos in the books, although that may just be because this is a juvenile)

Ja it is in the mining area so it's accessable during the day but no one's allowed there after dark.

But come pop by and we can have a look.

I was also looking for something larger and orange so it was just pure luck that the fellow jumped.

It was found under a rock about 2m from a pool no bigger than 2m x 1m.

I'll head back there in a few weeks to see if I can find a mature one.

Wow, that's a beautiful frog.

Pity that we aren't allowed to keep amphibians. :-(

Nice Find
