Boomslang - Dispholidus typus.

Looks like a dispholidus typus (boomslang) female to me as well.

Wow guys, thanks so much. The guy who spotted it said it was a brown house snake - we went back to have a look but it was already gone. The photos above are what he took. Glad we did not see it. Thanks again.

At the camping sites, there were lots of moth balls that had been placed all over the sites where we pitched out tents - someone mentioned that this could be to deter snakes - is this true?

That's a female Boomslang.
No moth balls don't.

I have actually heard the contrary, coral snake.

From loads of guys I have heard that mothballs do the trick very well. Snakes dislike the pungent smell and move away as soon as they encounter mothballs. It might not prevent them from coming to your house to start, but it will chase them away once they arrive. Or that's the theory.

Of course I would never want to keep snakes away from my own place, so I wouldn't know
