Herping over easter (6 Sundevalli in one night!!!)

Postby Natal Black » Tue Apr 10, 2007 2:54 pm

We had a long weekend here in SA so I headed into the bush to see what I could find , I ended up finding some really interesting snakes that I had never come across before .. All in all , had an amazing time !!
Did not want to come back home , here are some pics..

Some shots of the locations where I found snakes during the night , I gps'd the locations , then returned during the day to get the Habbitat Shots.

Bitis Caudalis Habitat....

The first Snake I found was a big suprise , it was dor but belly up and at first I thaught it was a night adder , flipped it over and was very suprised !!Im not sure what sub species it is , but its an Elapsoidia..

This was an awesome find but the next snake was even better and ALIVE !! an adult Elapsoidia longicauda

I ended up on the night with 6 longicauda !! these snakes are seldom seen and to see so many was puzzling ... It was suggested to me that they are probably seasonal which would explain their high numbers over this period. AWESOME!!!

Next up was this scutatus ...

Here are some other finds from that evening..

This snake was alive when I found him but was hit really bad , he was dead by morning ...
Telescopus semiannulatus

This next guy was super tiny!! Im suprised I saw it , he was crossing the road at 3 in the morning and the temperature was 22'c at the time ...
Never seen one before !! I had to be carefull it was not a stilleto. looked very similar..

Quil snouted Snake

This next guy was beautifull , somewhat resembling a Kenyan Sand Boa..
Blind Snake --- sp??

Got some house snakes aswell which I had never seen before in this location , they are patternless with the white under belly coloring extending further up the body , really nice !!..

Dude I am awestruck! Excellent finds there.
I guess you'll be spending a couple of hours tonight posting on SARCA ;)

Does anyone know anything about juvenile laungicauda , because I found one that was pretty small and it looked like an adult in appearance , surely such strong banding could not fade so rapidly ?
So the question is are they actually born banded or not?

You can also send one of the mods the info and we can do it for you. It is vital that this information is recorded!
