That little plant is called
Tragia glabrata... and I know it because I know it's effects
It is a foodplant for the jokers (
Byblia sp) and piper (
Eurytela sp) butterflies, and its a BLIXEM! The interesting thing is that the same plant (or possible just a variation of it) in KZN forests such as those at Kosi Bay doesn't sting at all, yet you'll know it when you touch one in dry bushveld areas such as Pretoria, Magaliesberg, Thabazimbi and even places like Eshowe and Mkuze. I've transplanted some from Kosi Bay and within 2 seasons they changed from the non-stinging versions into serious stinging nettles. The other interesting thing is that you don't suffer from the effect of the leaves if you keep the leaves wet. So if you have to handle any stining nettles such as these or
Urtica sp., give the plants a good spray of water and hope for the best.
The unidentified spider looks like an Argiope sp or Garden orb web spider, but I can't say my spider identifying skills have any value in this world!
We must remember that a photograph can hold just as much as we put into it, and no one has ever approached the full possibilities of the medium - Ansel Adams
