IDing snakes from books dont always work well because you only have one or two photos of each species, although that's is the first place we all start and the easiest place to start.
Once you have seen a bunch of snakes in the field you will quickly learn how to ID most without the help of your books.
Just be careful in the future approaching a snake before you have an accurate ID. It could have ended badly for you had the snake spit in your eyes. Enticing/teasing any snake is never a good idea.
