SNAKE IDENTIFICATION PLEASE

SNAKE IDENTIFICATION PLEASE

Postby Sums » Tue Aug 21, 2012 1:37 pm

Hi there

I recently moved into a 24ha plot in Scheerpoort, Hartbeespoor Dam, North West, now today I found a snake by my back door, I have no idea what type of snake it is, I did not want to kill it as I was not sure if it was dangerous or not. I followed it and it went into a hole by a wall near the house. I have two small children and I am stressing a bit, I found a different snake a couple of months ago but I was told it was a house snake.

Your assistance will be much appreciated.

That is a baby Snouted cobra (Naja annulifera)
It is very venomous.Maybe you should get some of the reptile expecrts in your erea to remove it and relocate it to a safer place,if it poses a threat to your children.

i think vuduman is right it does look like a snouted cobra. and rather call someone who can safely remove it instead of killing it.

Definately not a house snake, and it is most certainly a snouted cobra. They have have a potent neurotoxin aswell as cytotoxin and can give a serious bite that can cause fatallity. I agree, get someone out there who knows what he is doing. If you have a lot of debris lying around, maybe ask that same person to have a look around and then you should remove the debris from the immediate area around the house.

complements of google:

Brown house snakes are small harmless nocturnal snakes easily identifiable by the bold light stripe above each eye. They grow to about 60-100 cm.

Snouted cobras on the other hand are aggressive highly venemous diurnal snakes. To the untrained eye they are difficult to identify, that is until thay spread their impressive hood :D They can get up to about 1.8 m in length

Hope this helps, when it comes to snakes and you families safety it is always good to get more than one opinion.

James
