Can I varnish the wood in my tank?

Postby Brennanm » Tue Mar 26, 2013 11:49 am

Hi all,

My previous post was regarding the mold growing in mt GTP's tank. Now i see its happening (not as bad) in my gecko enclosure as well. I have bought a 400L air pump and im running air into all the tanks so they can dry overnight (I was told this is crucial). But i had a thought. I have some "food safe" lacquer spray that i thought i could spray the wood with just to seal it. It probably wont last forever but im sure it will slow the mold down. I want to try it for the geckos (Leo's) and the GTP (Baby)

What do you think?

Has anyone tried this before or have any reasons why it wont be a good idea?

Regards

I would just build the cages suited to the animals that you are keeping instead of trying to get them to adapt to what you have managed to put together for them.

Geckos are from arid areas and mold would be the last thing that they have ever seen.
It is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

Those who are afraid to ask are ashamed of learning.

You can varnish the cages to seal the wood. Just make sure that it stands for a few days so that it dries and the fumes dont kill your animals. Buy them plastic tubs for the next week while the cages dry.
If you cant beat them, join them. If you cant join them, shoot them.
