Two large pythons on the loose in Sandton
2012-03-28 13:29

In a heartfelt plea, owner Angela Latimer has asked anyone to contact her immediately if they spot the snakes, saying the snakes will not kill or strangle any person or pet.

The 3m snakes went missing on Tuesday at 06:00 after they climbed up the burglar bars in her home and pushed down on the door handle, which opened under the weight.

“I’m freaking out,” she told News24. “They’re very inquisitive and are always crawling up things and they’re not used to the new area”.

Latimer asked for calm, saying: “Please understand. They are in more danger than humans are.”

The snakes have been hand-reared in captivity and differ hugely from snakes in the wild that hunt for food.

“They’ll die if not looked after. They don’t know the ways of the world.”

The snakes only eat rats and are fed once a week. They were last fed on Saturday but can live without being fed for two months.

“They won’t eat a baby or a rat or a five-foot man next door,” she said.

Latimer believes the snakes are very close to her home. “They are bright yellow and purple and stick out like a sore thumb,” she said.

People who see the snakes are advised to call Latimer immediately or cover them with a large plastic container until she arrives.

A veterinary rescue team is currently on their way to help with the search. Latimer has seven other hand-reared snakes.

Navesh Singh, inspectorate controller at Sandton SPCA, told News24 they received a few calls from concerned neighbours, but haven’t had any reports of a spotting yet.

Cannot imagine this being good for the Hobby... I still don't understand exactly how they got lost, seriously - aren't they supposed to be in an escape-proof room/enclosure? Seems negligent to me.

What a pointless article. It doesn't give the location, or a decent description of the snakes, or what species they are, or anything useful at all.

What did she keep them in? Did they roam freely through the house?

This lady was on 5fm just after 09.00 this morning. Apparently she just recently moved and the snakes have their own room in which they "live". It is 2 lavender albino retics.

Johannesburg - Two large Lavender Albino Reticulated Pythons have gone missing in Tugela Road, Gallo Manor, in Johannesburg.

Im sure there will be some guys looking for these to keep for themselves ;) Beautiful snakes what a pity, not good for hobby but accidents do happen. Guess one needs to be extra careful when dealing with monster snakes.

So a 3m Retic wont try to eat a baby?
I hope the snakes are recovered without incident. People need to start being more responsible!
Don't worry, its completely tame . . .

This is stupid... i know she wants her pets back, but if there is one animal that will adapt to the wild again... it is snakes!
next thing that will be on the search list is Jimmy's jack russel from next door ;-)
I love God and the wonderful nature that HE created!

They won't survive the first Gauteng winter outdoors. Nice place Gallo Manor... just next to the JHB country club with all its rocky outcrops, dams and plenty of food :)

Don't understand the following statement
“They won’t eat a baby or a rat or a five-foot man next door,” she said.
when she said in the line before, they are fed rats?

There must be some snake keepers out there looking for the beauts.

I feel very sorry for this women. She has too compete with ignorent people and greedy snake catchers. The last few posts on how recovered "expensive" animals we treated are very sad indeed.

Seems like the world is filling to the brim with #$@%&^*.
If I'm gonna be an old, lonely man, I'm gonna need a thing, you know, a hook, like that guy on the subway who eats his own face. So I figure I'll be Crazy Man with a Snake, y'know. Crazy Snake Man. And I'll get more snakes, call them my babies, kids won't walk past my place, they will run. "Run away from Crazy Snake Man, " they'll shout!”

I really am sorry for her loss and am able to have symathy as we most keepers have lost loved animals. I can also have empathy regarding the street value of the animals. What I don't' have patience for is when people place articles in the public media without getting the green light to publish incorrect, misleading and dangerous information. I had no idea that pythons could be conditioned and hand reared. Just my opinion. Hope she gets them back.

Johannesburg - The two large Lavender Albino Reticulated Pythons that went missing in Gallo Manor have still not been found.

The 3m snakes went missing on Tuesday at 06:00 after they climbed up the burglar bars in owner Angi Latimer’s home and pushed down on the door handle, which opened under the weight.

Latimer told News24 a reptile rescuer would be coming to search for the snakes at 13:00 on Thursday. He was allegedly held up by a missing crocodile and got bitten by a puff adder.

“I’m glad it’s warming up a bit, [the weather] might bring the snakes out,” said Latimer.

The reptile rescue specialist uses various techniques to find the snakes, including sniffer dogs to find their scent.

There have been no reports of snake-spottings and Latimer has been to all the neighbours and their gardens.

Latimer asked for calm regarding the situation. “My snakes eat very regularly; they don’t have the fear of not being fed. I just want my snakes back. They’re my babies.”

The snakes only eat rats and are fed once a week. They were last fed on Saturday but can live without being fed for two months.

Latimer asked anyone who has seen the snakes to contact her at angi@reportstar.net.

LOL! That sounds like a typical Sareptiles member.

It is 2 lavender albino retics.

Well.... do you really think these 2 embarked on a well thought out escape plan? I can imagine the things they were wispering to each other while they were working on the handle to open the gate. They're probably half way across the Indian ocean on their way back to Borneo, and they don't have to wisper anymore.
Seriously. What are the chances that 2 escapees follow each other out into the blue yonder? I say, not good. I hang my head in shame as I say this but I have had numerous instances where 2 cage inmates 'disappear' and always finding them in completely different parts of the room/house - not together. If these snakes escaped then you're bound to find one of them. If they've been stolen then you're not. I hope for this woman's sake it's the former, otherwise if I was her I'd make a list of all people that knew about her owning them and start from there.
