Bitis atropos (Berg Adder)

I have had a range of babies born from a single female. Both the male and female were heavily patterned with even slight blue flecks in the markings. One of the babies was solid red and another was red with slight patterning on it. The rest looked similar to the parents though. I think that this allows the babies so survive in different niches within such a small location and still not compete with each other for food. The babies eat lizards, frogs and small mice. They also eat each other!!!!

They are around, we have looked long and hard but have not found any yet. Drummer and I are not going to give up, will keep at it until we are successful.

They are probably the easiest of the small Bitis along with B.caudalis; but do not overfeed; I feed per month is norm.

TP I would say success in captivity depends largely on the locality of that individual. Limpopo caudalis are almost indestructible but Western Cape and often Northern Cape dont do well at all.
With atropos it seems Mpumalanga and Cape specimens do better than Drakensberg ones which generally dont last a year and are full of parasites.
This has been my experience and not necessarily the rule.

Having said that, I have been told that atropos from some areas in the Cape such as Bettys Bay dont do well which is unfortunate as they are apparently among the nicest looking, and have also heard of NC caudalis doing well. So I guess I shouldnt generalize
