mildly venomous in bitis

Postby xerophak » Tue Apr 07, 2009 5:02 pm

Hi, I have a major contradiction
listening and reading a good book on information on poison, it said that these are mildly venomous following Bitis  ......... :
only causing pain ,local swelling and little necrosis, but no dangerous to man
bitis schneideri
bitis peringueyi
bitis armata
bitis albanica
bitis rubida
bitis inornata and bitis xeropaga

I want to know your opinion

Not many bites recorded but I would say that description is fairly accurate.
Lots of pain, significant swelling and some necrosis. I saw the arm of a xeropaga bite victim last year and there was some decent swelling.

The loss of a finger is not that trivial and there is always a possibilty that you are allergic to the venom in which case it will be dangerous.

I dont think there are too many bites recorded from these species so we are not 100% sure. I would not loose sleep if one had to escape in my house for example.

How big was the xeropaga specimen which bit the guy mentioned?

I thought so Rob. I would imagine that an adult xeropaga specimen should inflict as much damage as an adult cornuta, which is no laughing matter. Once they attain adult lengths (especially females), then the smaller venom yield as mentioned by Branch (Compared to arietans), gets slightly balanced out by the sizes both cornuta & xeropaga can attain.

I dont think I explained properly, my point was that it was quite nasty. The entire arm was very swolled and discoloured, I do not recall the extent of the necrosis (silly I know but it was some time back now) but yes I dont imagine these snakes are anything to take lightly

I know of a well known breeder in KZN who claimed this about cornuta, but I seriously doubt it xerophak. As you know, sperm retention is more common with other groups such as coloubrids.
