Bitis g.gabonica or Bitis g.rhinoceros

Postby _THEO_ » Sat Sep 03, 2011 1:46 pm

I bought her as a Bitis g.gabonica but she has almost no horns compared to others I've seen and she has that extra teardrop under her eye?
If the two sub-species had to breed is that you would get? :?:

I am almost 100% sure (I say almost because I might be wrong haha...) it's B.rhinoceros...I have seen quite a few with that small tear before and I'm pretty sure if you google "Bitis gabonica" (images) you will see what I mean...
She also seems to have average sized horns from what I can make out ?

Hope I didnt lead you off the track haha...

Regards.

Did you get a TOPs permit? That could help you out ;)

The other thing that makes me question it is that the petshop where I bought her bought a large pair of gaboons ( I think at the same time they got mine in) but the one is western and the other is eastern. I did google them a couple of times and I also saw B. Gabonica with a very small second tear. Her tear ends one scale above her labeals(???). Is it possible that her parents were a mixed pair?

I have seen quite a few of these coming in from Ghana with a tiny spot under the eye. There is no way that they could be hybrids as the two species do not overlap in that area.

I doubt it was imported. I think the parents could've been a pair like the pair the petshop got in.

No petshop is allowed to have B. gabonica for sale or even on display.

Here is a B. rhinocerus with the same teardrop under the eye.

I know he is not a hybrid because he is a wild caught from Ghana.

They bought the snakes as a B. rhinoceros pair but the one turns out to be a B. gabonica.
What would the offspring from a cross look like even though it's probably illegal to cross them?

Hard to answer that, the 2 subspecies have very subtle differences between them. The babies would have traits of either or both depending on which of the genes are more dominant. All speculation.

Just for interest sake, there's a petshop in Nelspruit that has a B.gabonica in display without TOPS permits.

A number of pet shops have recently had Gaboon vipers and even Puff adders on display and for sale stating that they "were imported from Tanzania" and they do not require permits. This is not true !!!!! The species is protected not the "race" and if it is of the species Bitis gabonica or Bitis arietans then you require a permit for it irrespective of where it comes from.

In the past when Bitis rhinoceros was still Bitis gabonica rhinoceros then permits were required for these snakes as well. This was also used for "Cape parrot" subspecies that did not occur in SA. Since that has been revised now these species no longer require permits either.

Just wanted to add to this by saying that I am aware of this petshop and it has all its permits in order and they work closely with parksboard
