That is definitely cute! Would this species be considered the southern African version of a hognose ?

Not at all they are far more toxic then a hognose.the bite is not fatal but you will be in alot of pain if it tags you.
Just keep in mind very little is knowen about their venom

Apparently there has been a death recorded from this snake. I would not assume it is "technically harmless" like a hognose snake.
It is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.
