The Department of Environmental affairs and Agriculture arranged the workshop. The public were invited to previous consultations and were asked to give input after the initial publication in the government gazette. DEA then looked at who all had sent in comments and on the basis of that the South African Biodiversity Institute was tasked to put together experts in the reptile field to come up with the final listings which are then forwarded to the minister for final approval before publication.
Due to the fact that so few people came up with reasonable scientific arguments for or against any given species only the people eventually involved in the workshop were invited. I was not there as a member of the public but as a representative of the SA pet traders as well as the THA.
The opportunity for public consultation and participation passed many months ago. See the beginning of this thread for cut-off dates. There were two opportunities to make comment and if nobody used that opportunity then that is too bad as government has met the constiutional legal demands to now be able to pass the law.
It is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.
Those who are afraid to ask are ashamed of learning.
