ID this snake please

Postby infoguru » Thu Oct 21, 2010 1:29 pm

On Wednesday night as I closed the door between our coridor and spare room I accidentaly caught this snake's head between the door and frame. I am normaly careful with snakes, because I battle to ID them. could someone help me with this.

We live between durbanvill/Paarl/malmesbury in the western cape, on a small holding. and have a 3 year old son that is very inquisitive and not careful. Therefor I just want to ID this snake

That is a juvenile Mole Snake.
They are harmless.

The head confuses me, the markings and colour on the body looks like a juvenile mole snake. Some side-on pictures of the head would have help more.

Is it still alive?
Mitton, the coloration and marking maybe but the the head is to broad for a mole snake, but as he said he caught it's head between the door and frame.

It does not look venomous... yet anyway..
In some ways it looks like a checkered garter ?!

A side view would help maybe.

The head looks strange because it was crushed in the door. It was an accident but I would look around because there is a good possibility that there are more baby mole snakes in the area.
It is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.
