Losing tails is normal for geckos and happens as a result of trauma or stress. The wound usually does not bleed much because it breaks along a specific plate and this heals fairly quickly. Keeping it clean is just a precaution although it would not be as important as if it had lost a leg or was injured.
It is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

Hi
I have a Savannah Rock Monitor who I am concerned about. Firstly it hasn't eaten in about 2 weeks. It is shedding looks dehydrated and listless which I would think is due to it not eating. I tried hand feeding him crickets but it just won't eat which is really not like it. PLEASE help me and give me advise on how I can get it to eat. I spoke to the guys at the Pet Store where I got it from and they weren't sure if maybe it is a hibernating Reptile as it comes from the Savannah. It was suggested that I give it a wash down to help soften the skin and for the dry skin to completely shed. I was also told to try Electrolize to help get the reptiles appetite back.
Make sure it has a warm basking spot and a nice place to hide. Try some chicken neck/giblets but crush it with a hammer and offer on a plate. I am assuming it's small so just cut the food to size. Warm bath should help. Maybe a trip to the vet will be a good idea.
I had a rock monitor that came in and it was not looking good. It was very shy and very lathargic. Refused mice so I left it with some chicken and it ate everything.
Hope all works out.

Hi Dmd, has the tail dropped from the base or has there been an accident? When the tail drops from the base, things are often straight forward and it is rare for complications to occur - but there is a risk of these with any reptile. Keep the wound clean and definitely change onto kombuis towel. If you see that the wound is starting to scab up excessively and the skin looks red or blistery, this is when you will definitely need to seek veterinary treatment and advice.
