Boa not eating

Postby Hells0007 » Sun Mar 28, 2010 6:47 pm

My big male boa of 1.7m stopped eating last week. This is a first for him being a good eater since I got him at 10 weeks old. His cage setup has not change in any way. He shows no interest in food what so ever, what can be wrong?

I will appreciate your help.

Thank you

If it is just one week i wouldn't worry just yet.

Try again in a few days.

Adult snakes tend to eat less and less the older they get.

Also males tend to go on hunger strikes certain time of the year, although this is a bit early.

If his appatite doesn't improve, I suggest you "hibernate" him this winter and he's sure to come out of it hungry and rejuvinated.

What are you feeding him? Live or dead prey?

I had a good look at him today, his movement seem slow, even his tong seem to be moving slowly if I handle him. He had a good feeding response in the past.

When was his last meal?

I feed my RTB's every 4 to 5 weeks when they go over 1,5 metres and they always have a good feeding response and stay in good condition.
If I try to feed sooner they act uninterested.

I know it is worrying if a snake changes his behaviour, but I think it is just the cooling of the weather that affected his appetite a bit.
I would wait another 2 weeks before I start worrying.

What is his cage temperature? If he is lethargic you must have a look at his heating.

If he has just stopped eating, and his cage is fine, I would not be concerned if he is of a healthy weight. Some males will start going off food now becuase they want to breed. Just make sure he has no symptoms to show he is ill.

Do you have an adult female for him?
