thats a tad far my grey rat snake seems to have developed a taste for chickens but he still eats adult mice and rats so i reckon he'll just have to stick with the latter :D How long can day old chicks survive for? Do they need special food etc?

They require additional heat at night. Also they can be supplemented with chick feed. Mine roam around in the garden during the day. Be aware that they grow quite fast and will soon be too big for your rat snake to eat.

If you can arrange with the hatchery they will often sell you the reject chickens which will not survive. Sometimes these will be freshly gassed to make sure none of them survive in any case. They can be used as food but are not very nutritious. Day old chicks have very little meat on them.

Ask around at your pet shops or try farmers co-ops. Just a thought.

I know someone that owns a chicken farm out by Delmas, I can ask him for you if you are interested.
