Is it's range confined to an entire island?

It's range is confined to one island, but not the entire island.

Is it terrestrial, arboreal or fossorial ?

They are arboreal, although they do not live high up in trees.

Today's clue (might make it a lot easier)

There are similar animals fairly widespread on Madagascar and surrounding Indian Ocean islands, although I doubt genetically related, there are similarities in appearance and habits.

Does the animal belong to a small genus regarding the number of species ?
Because if it belongs to the genus that I think it does (today's clue supports my suspicion) then I just give up ;)

I think there are about 30 species in the genus, so quite a large number of species actually.

Mmm well then I think I might have it, but I'm not so sure as it doesn't seem consistent with all your clues.

The first thing I thought (now ruled out), especially after the clue about Madagascar was Anolis, which consists of over three hundred species !
Makes thirty look like a walk in the park.

Will take my shot tomorrow then.

I don't think this is right, it just seems too simple, but here is my guess anyway.

Galapagos land iguana (Conolophus subcristatus)

Nope, both off.

I am travelling so let's make this a lot more simple ;)

The animal in Madagascar my mystery reptile is similar to are the Day Geckos (Phelsuma).

This reptile resembles a peacock to a greater extent.

The peacock thing makes me think Crotaphytus ?
But Phelsuma doesn't fit in there.
