Please help identify this snake.

Hi all,

First post on the forum, and only due to this cutey crawling in on us whilst watching TV a few minutes ago.

Managed to get some pics, not too good though, hope it's good enough.

Not too familiar with the snakes in the KZN region as we are originally from CT, so please can you assist in identifying this snake. From the 1 pic it looks a little injured on it's head. What should I do with the snake?

thanks - appreciate any responses.
Doug

Hey there, To me it looks like a herald, I normaly see ones with red lips and not as white as this one.

Can't see clearly but to me it looks like a bad shed up to the middle of the head, I can be wrong there.

Regards

That is indeed a Herald Snake; crotaphopeltis hotamboeia. They can have both red and white lips. Nice find.

Wow - you guys are good. And up late/early.... :)

Thanks for the info.

What should i do? Release or try and keep?

I stay in Pinetown, Durban, right next to a nature reserve area. Always wanted a snake, and the wife seems ok with this one... LOL

Hey man that sure is a herald. If you want to keep a pet snake I would suggest something more like a brown house snake. The herald might be tricky to supply food for such as frogs or toads. The snake also looks kinda small so finding small prey is another problem hey. Its great you want to keep a snake but maybe something simple to start with, unless you are up for frog hunting haha then by all means good luck...JP

Frogs? we get a few of those every now and then...

We have tons of gecko's though :P I was reading in the Herald Care Sheet that gecko's and lizards are a food source also. My main concern is the safety of the snake.. so if it's best to release, i'd rather do that..

How would i tell if male/female?

IMO it would be better to release the little one, finding frogs in the upcoming winter is going to be a huge mission and these snakes like to eat A LOT. Rather get a brown house snake, you can get one for very little money. They are also very easy to care for and they eat mice which you can buy at most petshops.
