Camp Fire stories

Postby Bushbaby » Fri Jun 15, 2007 9:57 am

We need your camp fire stories!!

They must be true, and there must be photos to prove it. In the next month you can post as many camp fire stories as you wish.

On the 16th July the best story will be chosen and the winner will receive a SOS² T-Shirt.

Happy posting!!!

Strange things snakes do in the mating season.

A few years back I was working on a BBC doc about mambas. I was on the Bluff at Durban filming green mambas mating. Iwas getting some lovely stuff and was engrossed with eye to the viewfinder when Sheila (my wife at the time) yelled "mamba on the camera" Sure enough a green mamba had climbed up the tripod and was eyballing me. This is absolutely true and not a setup; Sheila took a still photo. There is one available but I think Johannes scanned it the other day.

Looking at that camera is was quite a few years back. You made it sound like it was the other day.

Yes BV, 1982, and using the good old Bolex. Upgraded to Arriflex later. Most wildlife docs are on digi beta now, but film is still used quite a bit.
That story made one of the TV Mags BTW

Don't have pics to prove this..but I once took a friend out hunting in the townships out behind Toti. He was very much an amateur herper and we were scratching around what remained of an old mud hut when I told him I could smell that there was a Brown housesnake nearby (I could smell the musk). True as nuts I found one within the next 5 steps.
He still thinks I'm a legend because of it. haha

Ok,here goes.
We were 12, adventurous..and we got what we were looking for :D

My best mate Christiaan Kirsten and I went on our very first bass fishing trip.
Our fishing bait looked like a box of crayons--lures and mooties and what have you.
Everything except for any skill or knowledge...

We got to the site and started flicking rods around like oldtimers.
I liked these Elvis movements way too much, and decided
to build up momentum for a deep one, and next moment my mate's skin on his skull almost went with the spinner!!!

As he was standing behind me I hooked him in the head and went forward with force..EINA

TRAUMA,TEARS and SHOCK.
My dad rocked up and decided to give him some old fashioned vet stitches which did the job somehow.

You wont be reading this bro, but good times hey ? :D

     Good one LJS. ;)

We were on our way to Klipdrift dam near Potchestroom to fish with some police task team friends. Now these guys are paraad and they have armour and weapons to take out anything. On the dirt road just before the entrance to the dam I spotted a roadkill (Rinkhals) and decided to take it along. At the campsite I secretly smuggled the rinkhals into the tent(Big Army tent) and put the snake onto one the pillow on one off the stretchers. These guys have been drinking and partying (as all fisherman do  ) the whole night and needless to say they were babalas etc. The one guy went into the tent and the next moment it was Chaos. The sound of a R5 assault rifle and screaming from the guy in the tent let these bombefok guys dive down, leopard crawling, shouting, looking for extra guns etc. I almost died of fear and not laughter when he realise what was happening. After the dust settled I ended up in the dam full of pillow feathers, had to down a few strafdoppe and then helped them packed after the caretaker wasnt happy and ask them to leave.
