Cape cobra bite - a long unbroken record broken.

Postby armata » Sat Apr 02, 2011 3:19 pm

Ah well, a moments relapse, lack of concentration. Anyway I will make this brief. On the morning of the 31st Match (0720) my large male cape cobra tagged me on the side of my left palm. (0720) He came around the side of the hide box - my fault.

jka put a pressure bandage on me and I started to drive to medi clinic. at 0730 my vision was impaired and thats the last I remember.
Apparently I lost conciousnus and an army guy helped jka the rest of the way.

I will try and get full details later but basically - breathing problems, my kidneys failed and my blood pressure was dangerously low.
However, I responded well after 80ml of antivenom and got discharged this morning.

My heartfelt thaks to jka (a hero) and all those that rallied around. jka and nivea have photos of the bite.

Sorry if any typos but its been a bit traumatic and I had to tell my kin before I put on an open forum.

Also be aware if it can happen to me - I think I am one of the safest handlers around - well nuff said.

Good to hear that you are recovering well. Please if you can get some more details around the tests they did in hospital etc, it would be very interesting to see the results. As bad as a wet bite can be for everyone involved I think at this point in the profession/hobby we are able to record extremely valuable information with regards to the effects of venoms that may change the way we do things in the future. I hope your full recovery is speedy and complete. Take it easy.

I wish you a speedy recovery Tony.

This is a great wake up call for all of us on the forum.

All new guys thinking of keeping venomous, just remember Tony has MANY years of experience and if it can happen to him, it probably WILL happen to you.

Thanx for sharing this Tony.

Sorry to hear that - sounds like a nasty bite. The scary thing is even the most experienced handlers can have this happen - a good lesson. Mend well!

So sorry to hear, but glad you are feeling better!
