Ive also been in contact with Netcare, the Kuilsriver hospital here, and I have spoken with 3 doctors on seperate occasions just in case and it seems they are jacked up, and capable of treating envenomation effectively. I think their number is 082911.
If it hasnt yet, it will!

The one in KZN (ST Augustines Hospital) no longer exists.

Not sure, but it is listed as a Poison Centre so if not they should send you to the right place. Also found Garden City Poison Centre, Johannesburg: (011) 4955112

Down here the best I suppose would be Tygerberg, but seeing as many guys have medical aid, the Netcare, or Medi clinic groups is a better option, but considerably more expensive.
Ive been in contact with the medi clinic around the corner from me and have dropped off a protocol. The lady that contacted me was rather interested, as she said they have only had 1 snakebite in the last 7 years, and NONE of the staff has any experience in Snakebite identification or treatment. She said the bite case they had cost R10 000 per "unit" of AV, which doesnt sound right :smt017 please correct me if Im wrong. Also, any of you that have had exerience in getting Anti venom in an emergency please detail the process here. Specifically FAQ as well as contact details,
My main question to them would be how soon can they get sufficient (10 Amps) of polyvalent to a hospital in Cape Town.
If it hasnt yet, it will!

You can get 2 vials, a syringe and a suction device for R1200 at the Antivenom unit near me, but hospitals probably charge R9800 for a doctor to administer it.

In fact I think they supply the whole of South Africa with Antivenom, so maybe give them a call and they should be able to help you.
Oh and I meant R8800 hehe

Charl, the poison centre in St Augustines is officially closed, however, this does not mean they do not treat envenomations. My wife works for Netcare and I also have friends working in the emergency unit at St Augustines. The next closest official poison centre is in Underberg.
