I'm sure the the snake would also have "glad to be alive" instead of being chopped in half.
Why is it dead in the first place if the rangers correctly identified it as a mozambique spitter?

I agree. Although they are plentyful in KZN and Mpumalanga, if you have the right gear (as the rangers should have), it is not that difficult. On the other hand, we were not there and there might have complications. Still...

If you read the article you'll see that the rangers were not on scene when the snake was killed (a friend did it)..."They arrived within 10 minutes"...

Still a pity though...

Aah ok. Well read Eyelash. Think I got a bit too angry to read thoroughly.

The rangers identified it after it had been killed. Even so i would want a second opinion on the identification anyway.

Last week we had a girl who was bitten and the snake was identified as a spitting cobra. As a result they gave her morphine and ativan for the pain and anxiety and monitored the swelling. Unfortunately this is contra-indicated for Snouted cobra bites. Luckily the dead snake was there and I could ID it and they reversed the morphine effects with narcan and then gave her antivenom. They also had some old timer identify it as an Egyptian cobra and because the name did not show up on the antivenom pamphlet they were not going to give her antivenom.

In a few cases the dead snake does make a difference between the correct treatment and a total disaster.

I can't agree more! I've been called out 5 times this week for snakes which were definately boomslang! One actually was, then there were two spotted bushsnakes and two black mambas! Now I only do recovery and thusfar only one bite and as BV said, the result of a wrong ID could be fatal! Luckily they were right in this case.
