How did you get bit? What were you doing leading up to the bite?

He was trying to force feed. When he was gripping the snake around the head. Gave the snake just enough leeway to get a fang in.LOL I dont know who of you have seen that australian snake buster, he pinned a Death adder and got tagged. That is exactly the same thing that happend to pet boy. Errors in judgement happen so fast. The funny thing is petboy said he knew he was going to get tagged, he just couldnt think fast enough to stop what he was doing.

Glad you are O.K Dead_puppy. I was tube force-feeding a very ill Cape about two weeks ago and nearly suffered the same fate.

thanks for the kind words all. As dead puppy says, sometimes u just have that moment where the brain just does not function for that split second. I should know better than to do what i did and i am 100 % to blame for getting tagged. Definitely will not make that mistake again!!! My aim with the post is as BV says is to educate people on the severity of a copperhead bite so that they are more careful and are safer - let someone at least gain from my error.

That is so true.

I take it you are out of the woods now Petboy, once again, thanks for sharing your experience.

i dont care what anyone says regarding this thread all i know is that it has given me enough info regarding the keeping of copperheads. i think i might have prematurely gotten into the hots thing (please don't criticize and say im crazy) but i am going to learn from others mistakes. as far as feeding goes (if she refuses to eat) i never force feed, all i do is dangle a live mouse in front of her and irritate her enough to make her strike. once thats happened i leave the mouse and close the lid. when i come back she has eaten and is all coiled up and happy.
i have managed to get her from eating every 2 weeks to eating every week, and in my honest opinion i think im doing great.

so heres looking and thank you ever so much for the heads up

Glad your ok Petboy.

Morgaine :
all i do is dangle a live mouse in front of her

Ok, but what if tease feeding doesn't work ?

If nothing else works then force feeding is your only option or am I wrong ?

For somebody like me that hasn't had the "pleasure" of having to force feed a hot what is the best/safest way ?

as far as im aware of when a copperhead bites it causes the prey to urinate and thus triggers the feeding response in the copperhead and they follow the scent. i find it works best

but in order to do this safely use a long pair of forceps and dangle the mouse right in front of her face trust me she is going to go mental and strike. BUS AS FAR AS PINNING GOES I WILL NOT DO IT
