A quick question

Postby Jedi Biscuit » Tue Jan 27, 2015 2:08 pm

I am wanting to buy a 9 week old baby Green Iguana and the breeder is wanting to charge extra for it to be sexed. Is it difficult to sex them at this age? If so I understand the extra fee but if not am I being charged for something I shouldn't be??? Sorry I just don't want to make a scene for nothing

Did the breeder mention how he/she is going to be sexed? They are very difficult to sex as babies and if the breeder is going to charge you for it then I hope it's something more reliable, like probing, as sexing them visually is just a guess.
What a world....

Well I don't think of it as an extra charge, it's just that the value of an animal increases slightly if its sex is known.

His reasoning behind the extra charge was because it will take time out of his day to do so. I breed snakes and I will gladly sex my snakes for free if the customer wants to know, I just thought it might be a blood test or something like that which has bought on the extra charging. Also this is the first I have heard of someone charging just so that you may know what you are buying. Any pet shop with sex their animals for free. I just wanted to know so that I don't put two male iguanas together.

Agreed, if he's just gonna probe the animal I see no reason to charge for it.

Sexing iguanas is not that easy. If he is going to charge extra get a receipt in writing and work out what the penalties will be if he gets it wrong. If it is going to be surgically sexed by a reputable vet then that will be worth the extra costs. If he is just going to fiddle around with a probe then I would be skeptical.
