Where to find Reptile Incubator

Postby Zandre » Thu Apr 14, 2016 10:40 am

Good afternoon,

Just wanting to find out, does anyone know of anywhere I can find and buy a reptile incubator?
I've looked at a few places but I just can't seem to find one anywhere.

Much Appreciated,

You can just build one yourself for cheap.

What I do is take a big polystyrene box and put a plastic tub in the bottom that covers about the entire floor of the polystyrene box. Put water in the tub and 1 or 2 (depending on size) fishtank heaters in the water. You then set the temp of the heater\s to the temp you want in the incubator.
You can then just rest the tubs holding the eggs on the water tub or if the egg tubs are too small, you can put something in the water for them to stand on, I use upside down flower pots but some people just use bricks in the water.

If you let me know your area I can maybe help with a polystyrene box.

Thanks for the reply Mitton! I currently live around Durban, so I'm not too sure if you could still help with a polystyrene box?
Though if you can't, could I manage without the polystyrene box? Just simply use a cooler box or plastic tub?

I only saw after I replied it was posted in Exotic Lizards. What eggs are you wanting to incubate?
You can use a coolerbox, same setup as mentioned.

I actually want to incubate some Leopard Gecko eggs. Though I'll have a look around for some poly boxes and I'll be sure to ask a few pet shops for some!
I just have a question concerning the setup though, would it be better to use the water with a fish tank heater or should I rather go for a more "dry" setup
where I use a heating mat on the bottom of the tub with a thermostat?

]I made one using a polystyrene box (plastic places sell them). Its a little more complex and expensive than the one Mitton describes, but here it is.

1. The insulated box

2.Heat pad at the bottom... NB. this is connected to a thermostat, even though its probably the most expensive thing here, you'll make the money back quickly and not burn the house down.

3. Water bottles to hold the heat and it helps prevent hot spots under the tubs.

4. A grid, I cut the bottom off a plastic crate

5. The tubs for your eggs

6. A computer fan, its not important, but i like to turn it on every now and again to circulate the air in the box.

Extras, a digital thermometer and small light

Nice setup you have there IanM! I'm just curious as to what thermostat you have and how much it cost abouts?

I changed over to the water because I believe it will take longer to loose heat in the event of power loss/loadsheading.

That's what the water bottles on top of the heat pad are for...
