Snake Identification found in Randburg

Postby stingray1 » Sun Sep 22, 2013 10:13 pm

Good day.
Is anyone able to ID a little snake found in my garden in Sundowner, Randburg.
Its approx 20cm long, caramel brown in colour with a creamy white under-belly.
Whenever I brought my phone too close to try get a close-up of its face, it lashed out defensively at me.
Could this be an adolescent olive whip snake?
I managed to catch and release him in the nearby veldt but had I been bitten, what treatment would have been necessary?

This site wont allow me to upload any of the photos I took which is a total drag because 200 KB is pathetically small.

For some reason, the lashing out to your phone reminds me of a Herald Snake.

But let's wait for the pics first.

There are no lethal snake which have that description. The cobras in Randburg would have yellowish or pinkish bellies and make a hood obviously. The other deadly snake would include rinkhlas, puff adders and boomslang which also do not fit the description.

It would also not be a whipsnake unless you noticed some stripes on it.
