where are all the KZN herp. societies?

Here is the place to discuss anything not related to reptiles and does not fall into any other catagories.

it's weird. you would think with the SCORES of puff adders availible, one would have turned up by now. maybe a few of us should get together and set up a breeding project, and see if we can get something going. with the colouring and pattern variations of puff adders already out there, one could do some pretty amazing things with the species.

And just like that, the need for a herp society is highlighted!

BB, I hear you on the Monday/Friday night thing. No evening will suit everybody, I suppose, so I'd like to get a bit of feedback from the Durbanites....
What evening best suits you and will you attend?
What are you looking for in a Herp Club/Society?
Those who have been before, to HAN or to other such meetings, what did you like/dislike. Don't be afraid of offending me, I can take it!
For what its worth, I really enjoyed the evenings and the people who made the effort. I would most gladly get involved again if the interest is there and if I can help.

It sounds like a good idea! I really enjoyed the HAN meeting i went to a few years ago at 80's nightclub (I think it was called that). It was very full and i met many folk. I think this was in 2003 or 2004.

Educational Talks are always a drawcard, as are competitions and it can be a central point for sales or trades. But its a time consuming thing to manage and i would hate to be the organiser.

If a society was formed, I for one would like to see more talks on indigenous reptiles, whether its wild observations or captive care.

The problem is i live approx 140 kms away on the South Coast. But if there was a regular meeting i could try make it up.

Rob, from Toti was alway keen on an informal get-together braai type thing. I also really like this idea.

I prefer a less formal thing as well, but it still needs to be run properly. I think a lot more knowledge gets shared at such a meeting rather than where one person drones on and on.
However, you cannot put a value to a really knowledgeable guest speaker. I would even braai his or her meat for them!

If there is a meeting or braai, i will try drag as many guys up form the south coast as possible. Weekends are better and Saturdays probably the best.

I would say perhaps Weekends would be best suited and would have the best attendence as someone did say the issue if being far away or where the "meeting" would be held makes a difference.
Just a 2 cents worth.

friday nights probably, its the easiest night to work with. I think the purpose of the club would to be to network members and allow a sharing and trade of knowledge. i think it would kinda evolve on its own from there on. the main problem was with HAN was the infrequency of the meeting, 2 hrs every 2 months just becomes incredibly slow moving. once a month would be better.

Snakes4africa, no offense but my only problem with you is youre too short. Sorry but thats just how i feel ;)
Seriously though, Fri suits me best, informal, braai maybe, and i think allowing guys to bring available herps to trade would go down well.
The book thing you started was cool but didnt go further than 1 meeting.
Craig once a month you can make the trip. Accomodation is sorted :)

I just had a look at the member list that we had. There were around 50 members then.

The meetings started out on a Monday evening. After numerous requests it was changed to a Friday evening. I think there were only 4 or 5 meetings after it was moved to a Friday evening. We had less than 10 people there on a Friday evening and that included the "committee".

Let's see if we can get a list of people that could be possibly interested, before any attempts should be made. If it is decided to have a trial meeting, I think it should be towards the end of November, before the holiday season.

let's see...
Paul.

I would definately love to see some sort of an organisation forming! I know of a few guys that would be interested in joining! The best place to start would probably be a mailing list, making people aware of Whats happening! If i can have a list i would be more than happy to send some sort of letter out once a week or once a month! Pls let me know How i can help
