Natal green snakes often have black marks. Not as pronounced as P. semivariegatus but marks are there. I have never seen a uniform natal green, they always have some black, yellow and/or blue markings (feint or otherwise) on the neck.

Also remember P. natalensis ssp and P. semivariegatus hybridize freely, so you may be dealing with that.

Thanks Pythonodipsas, I was not aware that they hybridize.

Must be a Durban thing. I was aware of that either.

that is not a spotty but well a natal green. specimens from the greater durban area often ( more often than not ) have marks on the upper third but not as pronounced as spotteds.

I have a natal green that does not have any spots or dark markings. He is very calm and gentle even though he is wild caught. He was being ripped up by my dogs, so I have been nursing him back to health. His wounds have all closed now, but he still looks stragely. But again, plain green on the top, and beige/yellow on the belly. Very very long tail.

Those are not the greatest pics, but it does look like it possibly has keeled ventrals.. Do you recall if it had keeled vents?

I would go with semivariegatus. It looks to large to be a juvenile Natal with crossbars.
But then i have never seen a Natal Green Snake :)

@mongoose: unfortunately I cannot recall if it had keeled ventrals as my only concern at the time was to move it to safety and sorry for the quality of the pics I took them with my cellphone.
@alexander: you may be right as the snake was roughly about 60cm, I think I would also go with semivariegatus.

Well, P hopologastermmay also have the black/brown markings. More close up pics of head and body would have helped . Was black skin easy visible between scales?

No not really very visible I assumed it to be a natal green because of the lightness of the markings just didn't seem right for a P.semivariegatus.
