Snake ID Please

Postby Show69 » Mon Mar 14, 2011 9:06 am

Hi Everyone,

I was out flying this Sunday in (Gauteng) and was on my way packing up as I stepped over this little friend :)

Well as I got a major fright he took a launch at me, but at least I jumped out the way.

Anyway I love snakes but don't know which is which and what is what - I only know a few :)

This snake looks like an Adder type but not sure.

Unfortunately it was killed by one of the Senior people not wanting to take a chance with it.

So please can anyone ID this Snake ( would like to know what snake it was at least )

Much appreciated

That would be a juvenile Mole Snake (P. cana).

They adults are usually one colour, Black, cream, Brown or Greensish where the juveniles as you can see has a pattern like this.
They are non-venomous but can pack a nasty deep wound if they are adult.

Thanks for the reply and info nvlooi - Now I can let the senior person know who killed it - that is was not venomous. If I only knew I could have stopped him.

Sad to see people killing snakes - even though some are highly dangerous.

But thanks for the info much appreciated

I am sorry but why did you guys kill it?The snake looks so tiny, you could have just scooped it up in a bucket or box and then let it go some where safe.

Hi Tony,

As I stated above - If I just new a lot more about snakes I would have stopped him from killing it - As I wanted him just to let it be. Even if it was venomous I would still let it be and not harm it.

I am really sorry about this Monday photo which upsets so many, unfortunately the outcome was not what I wanted also.

At least I can educate the people at the flying field about this so this does not happen again.

My apologies!

It was near Bapsfontein, Scar69

As this would be a great habitat for then lots of farms and fields out there.

Hi Show69

Was this at the RC flying field in Bapsfontein? I know there are people on this forum that would gladly have come out and relocated the snake. If it is the RC field then this is prime snake habitat and the only reason you don't see more of them is because they keep their distance from the people and noise. Sad that these "senior" people are so ignorant regarding snakes and I agree education is the key... not to mention the risk of getting bitten while trying to kill it! They might be senior in some respects but not when it comes to snakes, next time stand your ground and don't be intimidated by them... this snake would have moved on if it had been given half the chance.

Very sad indeed!

Hi Kev,

No it was not at one of the RC flying fields but at Micro land. I will surely stand my ground next time as I will learn more about snakes myself so that I can identify what snake it is at least. And by this inform the people around me and call the necessary people if it is a dangerous snake that needs to be relocated.
