Large Skaapstecker

Postby armata » Tue Nov 11, 2008 12:36 pm

Just back from deHoop, I have found quite large skaapstekers there; the largest a male just over a metre. This one was almost there at 98cm, again a male. Does anyone find large skaapstekers regularly elsewhere?

In the Helderberg basin they're regularly over 75cm...and i've seen quite a few that are around 1m.

In mooiriver I've seen alot of them, haven't measured any of the large ones, but they look over a metre.

Nice one! People normally overestimate the lengths of snakes, but the skaapstekers and sand snakes are normally underrated. They appear shorter that they really are.

Yes, and on the large skaapsteckers its the body girth that is impressive.

Great pic Tony! Were using a small apeture and a tripod or a bean bag? Fish eye lens i presume?
