Rufous beaked snakes information

Postby Snakeguy5 » Tue Jan 07, 2014 4:36 am

I have been interested in these snakes for awhile, but the information about them is limited.
Does anyone here keep these? What temperatures are they at? Humidity? Cage size? Feeding?

Here in the USA these are not that common and most are imports.

Thank you! :D

Not bad snakes, they get quite long compared to the dwarf beaked! The ones we have kept fed on rodents. They are not very fast moving snakes so the usual size cage will work for them. They are normaly found in the less humid side of South africa but seem to be quite hardy chaps.

I've been keeping a group of 3.2 for a couple of years and they are simply amazing snakes. I house mine in a 1.8m by 90cm by 50cm (H) cage with lots of hiding spots and a hot basking spot that will sometimes go close to 45 degrees Celsius without them even moving away. That being said their cage must be large enough for them to escape the heat if need be. The ambient in their cage usually sits at around 28 or so. They do not require high humidity and are kept pretty dry. They have fast metabolisms and are fed at least once/twice a week on small meals (usually 2/3 wiener rats depending of the individual snake). BE CAREFUL WHEN FEEDING AS THEY HAVE A CRAZY FEEDING REACTION AND THEIR VENOM IS MUCH STRONGER THAN MOST BOOKS OR KEEPERS WILL TELL YOU.

These are also very active and inquisitive snakes so moving things around in their cage and adding new hides from time to time seems to entertain them ;)

They are not easy to breed in my experience and aren't seen too often even here where they occur.

I hope that helped you a bit ? Feel free to contact me if you need any more advise.

Regards,
Louis.
