Thanks for clarifying BV and BB - I for one have got past the snake/earthworm conundrum and have quickly mastered the pointy and non-pointy end of slithering discoveries (fitted quite easily into my 'I choose life' campaign). I am sure if I stare at enough pics of snakes with both scientific and common names that some might sink in for the next time we blunder across an exciting slithering reptile making this a really great learning tool ...

Shamroth, this is how your post should look:

Oh you are so lucky! Here I've been studying and writing papers for 4 days straight.

You see what I've done? It now has capital letters and punctuation where need be. This is exactly what this announcement is about. Stop being lazy and post properly!

Then shouldn't I write out 4 as four as well while we're at it?

LOL! To be eloquently correct, yes, but it's a bit ridiculous expecting people to type 'sixty nine' instead of just 69. Abbr. are acceptable.

Btw, that was MUCH better ;)

Froot. This might just be a stupid observation, but why exactly did you choose THAT specific number as an example?

Same reason that I picked it for my user name! ;) It's a cool number...

Okay lets not drift off the path too much now. This has to do with lazy postings.

Spikelet the idea is to make the posts more informative. If you are not sure what a rare or exotic species is being refered to then it would be easier if the common name is added.

If you just refer to a "watersnake" we have possibly 10 different genera which it could be and cover possibly 5 continents of origins.

We would like both the scientists and the beginners to be able to appreciate the post and possibly learn from it or be able to comment on it. This helps that we do not alienate anybody from enjoying the forum.

was that surpose to be the plussides of common names? it sounds to me like you, by mistake wrote common insted of scientific.

please add scientific names when ever possible. its much easyer to do a google search on the scientific name, to find some info or a common name, than it is the other way.

Exanthamaticus what I meant to say is where you just use scientific names often people have no idea what you are talking about. If you just use common names that happens even more so by combining the two more people will understand what is being said.

Even more importantly, if you use both names it will start rubbing off on everyone else. Soon everyone will be picking up the scientific names. thats good, because it means that we can teach and learn from one another.
