Breeding hinged tortoises?

Postby Ales » Sat Apr 03, 2010 10:29 pm

Hey Guys.
Has anyone been able to breed these small tortoises?
I know few people keep them but i've never heard of them laying eggs or producing babies?
I've never even seen a picture of a baby!
If someone has pics please share!

Thanks
What a world....

That is so cute!!
Thanks!

Im considering keeping a few adults and trying to breed them,if i get permits ovecourse.
They not as beautiful as leopards but they stay small so i can keep a few in a much smaller area.

I know this shouldn't be done with snakes but can tortoise babies be released into a wild area that the parents came from?
I mean like within an area of 5km wide.

My pleasure. I don't think there would be too much of an issue with releasing babies but maybe just have them checked over by a vet for any parasites or diseases they may have picked up while in captivity - it is great of you to be thinking of giving back to the ecosystem. All the best with this project, if you can get permits it could be great fun. Keep us posted!

Thanks
I have a friend in Hartebeespoort that often finds Spekes in the area.
If i can get permits and then get a few wc tortoises i can release babies back into Hartebeespoort.
I know with all the developement around the dam many tortoises are killed on the roads and picked up by travellers. :smt011
